Jose Duque's ZUMBATRES
Under the concept of blending borders and crossing boundaries, Jose Duque's ZumbaTres is a band , where the subtle combination of French Impressionism and the rhythmic flare of South American Culture takes a sharper turn. Rooting the music in the essence of jazz, the band, led by Venezuelan-born drummer, Jose Duque, offers an invigorating new sound that blends odd meter time signatures with their Latin influenced rhythms.
The origins of today's ZumbaTres is The Zumbao Trio, which featured Luis Gonzalez on guitar and Jeremy Hill on bass. The band came out with an album, Zumbao Trio, in 2001. Jose has performed with "Amaya: Flamenco Sin Limites", Venezuelan pop artist Felix Roman, Juan Francisco, Roldan Pena's Jazz 3, Flamenco y Duende, and Sara es Rara. He is also currently the drummer/percussionist for The Randy Armstrong Trio, T.J Wheeler, and Ottawa based flamenco guitarist, James Cohen
Jose Duque - Drums, Percussion, Composer
A native of Venezuela, percussionist/drummer Jose Duque is a graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston and has studied at the Escuela de Musica Ars Nova with Cuban master Ruben "Tuti" Jimenez. He has performed with Amaya: Flamenco Sin Limites, Venezuelan pop artist Felix Roman, Juan Francisco, Roldan Pena's Jazz 3, Flamenco y Duende, and Sara es Rara. Jose has recorded and produced the CD for the Latin jazz group CORASON. He is the drummer/percussionist for the Randy Armstrong Trio and leader of Jose Duque's ZumbaTres, an experimental jazz band. Also Jose is the founder of Roman(us) and electronica/ambient band that span two continents, America and Europe. Florida music critic Manny Hernandez describes Jose's music from "Gathering in Blue" as " and "Far Away" music that not only breaks style boundaries but also brings Venezuelan Jose Duque to the front of the jazz territory". Dan Sure - Piano
A keyboardist from the age of 5, Dan Shure has made a name for himself in the Seacoast NH area by being an in-demand solo pianist. Dan holds a BA in Music Performance from the University of New Hampshire. Believe it or not Dan also plays with the following bands: Analog Method (acid jazz electronica), Amorphous Band (groove, r&b, rock, funk), Boston Latin Band (salsa, merengue, etc), Rumba Na Ma (salsa), The Press (hip hop), Old Toby (reggae). He performs intensily over New England.
Nate Therrien - Bass
Nathan Therrien has been playing the bass for over fifteen years, and is an active member of the jazz community. He is currently in pursuit of a B.M. in Music Education at the University of New Hampshire were heis studying with master bassist John Hunter. As a freelance bassist Nate has played with the New Hampshire Philharmonic Orchestra, The Seacoast Big Band and several musical theater productions. In 2005 Nate played UNH Alumni Day, at the Pops in celebration of Stephen Sondheim birthday, Boston Symphony Hall, Nate is currently the bassist for The
Joe Delault Trio, The Identity Quintet, The NH Jazz Orchestra, Amigo Blanco, Scott Solski Quartet, and Jose Duque,s Zumba Tres.
Phil Sargent - Guitar
Phil Sargent made his professional debut at age 14, and has since worked with a number or prominant musicians including Dave Clark, Jon Funkhouser, and Matt Wilson. He studied composition and jazz improvisation at the University of New Hampshire and has studied with critically acclaimed guitarists Ben Monder, and Brad Shepik . Phil leads his own group whose compositions draw from a variety of influences, most prominantly the odd meters and eastern tonalities of ethnic Balkan music and modern jazz improvisation. This group is working on a recording to be released in the near future. Phil released his first recording under his own name in April of 2002. In addition to playing with his own group he enjoys
performing as a sideman in a variety of ensembles ranging from straight ahead jazz to the avante-garde and has recently joined the prominant genre-bending group "The Sonic Explorers"
